Royal Borough Honours for Harold Marchant
Greenwich Society stalwart Harold Marchant was amongst the sixteen local people and organisations who received the first Royal Borough Civic Awards at the inaugural ceremony in March. The annual Civic Awards will go to those who have made an "outstanding contribution to the social, economic and physical wellbeing of The Royal Borough".

Harold, a member of the Executive Committee for many years and with his wife Clare co-editor of the Newsletter, was honoured for his work with the graffiti removal group.
Many of us who were persuaded, or perhaps even press-ganged, by Harold into spending cold wintry mornings scrubbing away at the mindless tags which defaced Greenwich ten years ago know very well what a tireless crusade he has waged to clean up the town centre and further afield.
That was at a time when the Council did not take the problem so seriously and there is no doubt that it was Harold's efforts, and he would be the first to say, those of his helpers too, which got the graffiti menace onto the official agenda and helped to produce the zero tolerance approach which applies today .
So a very fitting award to someone who really has made an outstanding contribution.
